Are all homeless people 'missing'?
It is not known how many homeless persons are someone's reported (or un-reported) missing loved one, but many of them are estranged from family members due to severe mental illness and/or co-occuring substance addictions.
It is important to consider that anyone with an untreated mental illness could be extremely vulnerable to harm and exploitation due to his/her state of mind. An unaccounted for and unreported as missing person with untreated mental illness is susceptible to even more danger as they are simply not on anyone's radar. It is an unacceptable outcome.
Our founder, Libba Phillips, searched endlessly for her homeless and mentally ill sister when she disappeared in 1999. Her family's repeated attempts to file a missing person report with law enforcement were not successful until four years later in 2002. Her sister has a history of being lost and homeless with untreated mental illness and co-occuring substance addiction problems. During one of those missing years, her sister was found 8 months pregnant in a fragile condition and several geographical states away from where she disappeared. If her sister had not been found, what would have happened to the child that no one knew existed?
We must take another look at 'homelessness' and consider that there are those in that population who may be lost among us.
